Hi all,
I was going through system tools yesterday, and I discovered there's no scan disc. Is it because of the hp, or is there just no scan disc utility in win xp? If there's no scan disc, how does windows fix hard drive errors? or how about when your computer freezes, and you have to do a cold reboot?

Hello,
There is a scan disk feature. One way to find it is to go to My computer, find your C drive. Next, either use the application context menu key or find the properties under the file menu. Go to the tools tab, it is the first button normally landed on. It is called check it now.... Just go through the dialog box that comes up to check the proper options. That should help some, I hope.

thanks bandit, that makes me feel a little better now I know there is a scan disk, but does it automatically go in to scan disk after a cold reboot? I have had one freeze. I'm not sure if norton did it, but it seems as long as it stays in the background, everything runs smooth. I did the live updates like it wanted me to, and it didn't come up when I started the pc a few minutes ago.ever so often, it sounds like somethings coming up, but when I alt tab, there's nothing there but jaws and ie. It's stopped now.

Na, i don't thinkit does it after you turn it off.
This is because most of the computers that have xp on them will turn of properly when you just press the off button, meaning that you don't have to do start and shutdown, you just press off.
So, they think that you will just shut it down right.
It does have a habbit of not beeing able to complete the scan due to something or other, but it finishes it on the next reboot, which makes your computer take about 5 minutes to start that time.
BEN.
Actually, Windows XP's Chkdsk is not like Scandisk...Well, it is, in that it does the same stuff, but it's actually a comand-line ap that happens outside of the GUI. Therefore, if it is going to check the system volume, it needs to do so before XP starts up, and that's why it does it on reboot. Depending on the size of the system volume, and how much data is there on, it may take hours, so the best thing to do is fix the errors while you are sleeping. Don't panic. Windows XP manages itself very well compared to old 98. In fact, you only have to run defrag once in a while, and chkdsk hardly ever, due to the inherant stability of NTFS compared to old Fat32.
Well, I feel a bit better, I have to admit, I was scared when I didn't find it in system tools. I did have a freeze one time, and was terrified, because I didn't know what xp would do after an improper shut down. It just started up like nothing had happened. It sounds like doing a scan disk yourself is harder than under 95 and 98. I hope I don't have to do it often.

Yeah. When using XP, you will have to forget 98 ever existed. It's a whole new world, even though the two OS's look kinda the same. There's a lot of new functionality, and the things thqat are taken out are only things that sucked!
